Brightpath Alumni Foundation — Detailed Review Guide (first-time reviewer)
Canonical reference sheet: 04-brightpath.md. Freeze date and data-aging rules: 00-snapshot.md. Sales pitch script (different audience, don't use for testing): ../scripts/brightpath-demo-script.md.
1. What you're about to do
You are going to log into a demo copy of MemberVu that has been set up to look like a real nonprofit alumni foundation called Brightpath Alumni Foundation. Your job is to click through a handful of screens, compare what you see on screen against a table of "expected" values in this guide, and mark each item PASS or FAIL.
You are not testing code. You are not going to fix anything. You are simply confirming that the demo data looks right, so that whoever is presenting this demo to a real customer can trust it.
This environment is frozen — think of it like a museum exhibit behind glass. Nothing you click will "break" it, but nothing you do will reset it either. If something looks wrong, write down what you saw; do not try to correct it.
2. What is MemberVu, and what is Brightpath?
MemberVu is a web application that lets member-based organizations (clubs, associations, foundations, homeowner groups, gyms, and so on) keep track of their members, run events, and collect payments — like membership dues or event tickets. Every organization that uses MemberVu is called a tenant, and each tenant gets its own private, branded copy of the app: its own logo, its own colors, its own members, its own data. One tenant can never see another tenant's data.
Brightpath Alumni Foundation is one of five demo tenants built to show off MemberVu in different industries. Brightpath is pretending to be a nonprofit alumni foundation — the kind of organization that keeps in touch with graduates of a school and asks them to give money each year to support the school's mission.
Brightpath's story, in plain terms: alumni give at three levels. The most common level is called Alumnus (basically everyone who is a member). A smaller group gives more and is called a Patron. A small number of major donors give the most and are called Lifetime members. The foundation's big yearly event is a Homecoming Gala, which is both a party and a chance to raise money. The pitch behind this demo is: "MemberVu helps you tie giving to how engaged someone is, and tells you exactly who to call before the gala."
One more thing worth knowing up front: Brightpath deliberately avoids the word "dues." Because donors don't like being told they owe "dues," the foundation calls it a pledge or an annual gift instead. Same money, friendlier word.
3. Words you'll see (plain-language glossary)
| Term | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Member | A person who belongs to Brightpath — in this case, an alum who has signed up |
| Membership tier | The giving level a member is enrolled at: Alumnus, Patron, or Lifetime |
| Pledge / annual gift (their word for dues) | The yearly amount a member commits to give; functionally identical to "membership dues" in other tenants, just relabeled to sound donor-friendly |
| Invoice | A bill — a record that says "this member owes this amount for this reason" |
| Payment | Money that has actually been received against an invoice |
| "Simulated" payment | A payment marked this way because the demo does not process real money — it's a stand-in for a real transaction, not a bug |
| Allocation | The bookkeeping link that says "this specific payment paid for this specific invoice" |
| Event | Something Brightpath organizes and members can attend — here, the Homecoming Gala |
| Check-in | The record that someone actually showed up and was marked present at an event |
| Admin | A staff person with access to the management dashboard (as opposed to an ordinary member) |
| Member status (Active/Expiring soon/Expired) | Whether a member's current pledge period is current (Active), about to end (Expiring soon), or has already ended (Expired) |
4. The rules of this review
Demo123!Other rules to keep in mind:
- Judge everything PASS or FAIL only. There is no "mostly passes" — if something doesn't match, it's a FAIL.
- Never try to fix anything you find. Your job is to observe and report, not repair.
- Don't retry a failed login multiple times. The system limits login attempts across the whole network (about 30 tries per 15 minutes, shared by everyone testing). If you mistype a password, wait a moment and try again carefully rather than mashing the button.
- All money in MemberVu is stored internally in centavos (hundredths of a peso) but always displayed to you in pesos with a ₱ sign. Always check that the peso amount on your screen matches what this guide says.
- Some dates you see (like membership expiry) are calculated relative to when this demo was "frozen" (set up). If you're reviewing this a while after the freeze date, some things that were supposed to say "expiring soon" might now say "expired" instead — that's expected aging, not a defect. Check
00-snapshot.mdfor the exact freeze date.
5. Step 1 — Open the demo and sign in
- Open your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari — any modern browser works).
- Go to
http://brightpath.membervu.local:8090(if you're reviewing a cloud-hosted copy instead, usebrightpath.demo.membervu.com). - You should land on a login screen. Look for the Brightpath name or logo — this confirms you're on the right tenant, not one of the other four demo organizations.
- In the email field, type
admin@brightpath.demo - In the password field, type
Demo123! - Click the Log in (or Sign in) button.
What you should see: after logging in, you should land on an admin dashboard — a management screen with a navigation menu (usually on the left or top) showing options like Members, Events, Billing, and so on. If you instead see a member-facing screen with no admin menu, you may have used the wrong account — double check the email address.
6. Step 2 — Check the membership tiers
Membership tiers are the different giving levels a member can belong to. Let's confirm Brightpath has the three tiers set up correctly.
- In the admin dashboard, find the navigation menu and click Membership Types (it may be under a Members or Settings section — look for a menu item literally called "Membership Types").
- You should see a list of tiers with names and prices.
Expected:
| Tier name | Expected amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alumnus | ₱500 per year | This should be marked as the default tier |
| Patron | ₱5,000 per year | |
| Lifetime | ₱25,000 per year |
Mark PASS if: all three tiers appear with these exact names and exact peso amounts, billed yearly (annual, not monthly).
Mark FAIL if: a tier is missing, misnamed, shows the wrong amount, or shows a monthly billing period instead of yearly.
If something looks wrong: write down exactly what you saw (tier name and amount as displayed) and take a screenshot if you can. Don't try to edit the tier yourself.
7. Step 3 — Check the members list
Now let's look at the actual people (members) enrolled at Brightpath.
- Click Members in the navigation menu.
- You should see a table or list of member names, each with a status badge (like "Active" or "Expired") and usually their tier.
Expected:
| What to look for | Expected value |
|---|---|
| Total members shown | 10 |
| Members marked Active | 9 |
| Members marked Expired | 1 |
| Of the 9 active, some expiring soon | 2 (these should still show a future expiry date if you're reviewing close to the freeze date) |
| At least one Patron or Lifetime member visible and Active | Yes — this matters for the "who to call before the gala" story: the foundation wants to easily spot its bigger donors |
Mark PASS if: the counts roughly match (9 active + 1 expired = 10) and you can find at least one member whose tier is Patron or Lifetime.
Mark FAIL if: the total count is wrong, the active/expired split doesn't match, or you cannot find any Patron/Lifetime member at all.
8. Step 4 — Check the past event
Brightpath's signature event is a fundraising gala. Let's confirm it recorded correctly.
- Click Events in the navigation menu.
- Look for an event called "Homecoming Gala 2025". It should be located at the "Grand Ballroom."
- Click into the event to see its details, including ticket price and attendance.
Expected:
| What to look for | Expected value |
|---|---|
| Event name | Homecoming Gala 2025 |
| Location | Grand Ballroom |
| Status | Completed (it already happened) |
| Ticket price | ₱3,500 |
| Attendees checked in | 5 |
| Event date | About 60 days before the freeze date — this is the oldest event across all five demo tenants |
Mark PASS if: the event appears with status Completed, the ticket price shows ₱3,500, and check-in count shows 5.
Mark FAIL if: the event is missing, still shows as upcoming instead of completed, or the price/check-in numbers don't match.
9. Step 5 — Check the paid "Patron Gift" invoice
This is the step with the one trap you need to watch for, so read carefully before you judge PASS or FAIL.
- Click Billing in the navigation menu, then click Invoices.
- Look for an invoice titled "2025 Patron Gift".
Here's the trap explained plainly: the invoice is named "2025 Patron Gift," and a reasonable first guess might be that a "gift" should be a small, round number like ₱500. It is not — it should show ₱5,000. Remember from Step 2 that "Patron" is the ₱5,000-per-year tier. This invoice is really just that Patron member's annual pledge, dressed up in warmer, donor-friendly language ("Gift" instead of "Dues" or "Invoice"). So:
- If the invoice shows ₱5,000 → that is correct → PASS.
- If the invoice shows ₱500 → that would be a real bug (money displaying wrong, likely a centavos-conversion error) → FAIL.
- Click into the invoice to confirm its status and open the linked payment.
Expected:
| What to look for | Expected value |
|---|---|
| Invoice name | 2025 Patron Gift |
| Invoice total | ₱5,000 |
| Invoice status | Paid |
| Linked payment amount | ₱5,000 |
| Payment method/channel | "Simulated" (this is normal for the demo — no real money moves) |
Mark PASS if: the invoice shows ₱5,000, status Paid, and a matching ₱5,000 Simulated payment.
Mark FAIL if: the amount shown is ₱500, the status is not Paid, or there is no linked payment at all.
10. Things that look wrong but are correct
- "2025 Patron Gift" invoice shows ₱5,000, not ₱500. This is the Patron tier's full annual pledge amount, just labeled as a "Gift" instead of an invoice or dues notice. ₱5,000 is correct; ₱500 would signal a real money bug.
- The product sometimes still says "dues" instead of "pledge" or "annual gift." Brightpath's sales pitch prefers donor-friendly wording, but the underlying MemberVu product may not have fully renamed every label yet. If you see the word "dues" somewhere in the interface, note it as a wording gap — it is not a reason to fail this review.
- Summit Fitness Club prices are monthly, not annual (a completely different demo tenant — mentioned here only so you're not thrown off if you happen to see it referenced elsewhere).
- Vista Verde HOA's AGM event is free (₱0) with no payment records at all (also a different demo tenant — again, just for awareness, not something you'll encounter while reviewing Brightpath).
11. Finishing — record your verdict
Once you've gone through Steps 1–5, write down your PASS/FAIL results in the shared tracker: tester-files/04_TRACKERS/DEMO_REVIEW_TRACKER.md.
Your overall verdict for Brightpath is:
- GO — every step passed, the demo is ready to show a customer.
- NO-GO — one or more steps failed; note exactly what you saw so it can be looked into before the next demo.
